Marriage Family Therapist, Psychologist vs. Psychiatrist and Social Workers...What is the Difference?
Marriage Family Therapists, MFT
What is a marriage and family therapist? MFTs are trained to help individuals, couples and families uncover the root of the issues they are experiencing; the goal being, to eliminate the problem. We look at issues (whatever they may be) systemically, meaning that we are all connected to a system. We don't live our lives in isolation. The quality of our lives, how we view of ourselves, how we react to others, and our moods are largely affected by those around us (husbands, wives, children, friends, co-workers, strangers).
Our ideas about ourselves, who we are, and our reactions to external people and events are affected by our personal belief systems. Sometimes these belief systems are inaccurate. Other times, we simply do not have the tools to get ourselves out of the areas in which we are stuck. MFTs assist people in gaining understanding about themselves. We help people to see situations differently and realize when current thought patterns or behaviors aren't working. We can change the way we operate in this world once we have a clear understanding of ourselves. As a result of looking at ourselves, our situations or interactions will change.
Psychologists
Psychologists primarily work with psychodiagnosis, psychological testing, neuropsy¬chological evaluations, and psychotherapy with individuals, groups, and couples either in private practice or in a clinical setting.
Psychiatrist
Psychiatrists are MDs. They administer psychotherapy, electro-convulsive therapy, and prescribe medication.
Social Workers
