Insurance Coverage and Therapy
Benefits of Using Insurance
- It costs less
Downfalls of Using Insurance
- Reimbursement is usually limited to 10 sessions
- Couples therapy is seldom considered a problem eligible for coverage
- Access to medical/mental history
As therapists, we have to submit diagnoses and at times, specifics of your situation. Once your insurance company has this information, they have a permanent record of your issues. When applying for future insurance coverage, your mental history can be viewed. Might employers have access to this? They are not supposed to, but you never know.
- Inaccurate Assessment
Treatment plans may look very different when the therapist is told how s/he has to perform therapy by the insurance company. The insurance perspective of what is beneficial for the client may not coincide with what the therapist sees as the best approach to help the client.
